Why Electric Motorcycles?

To be honest with everyone when I first heard about electric motorcycles I thought it sounded pretty stupid and lame. ¬†Who would want that? First, they don’t make the same type of noise. Second, high cost when compared with limited range made them seem like the made no sense.

Both above points are currently accurate but I started reading and learning about electric motorcycle companies and the industry a little more. Some of what these companies and teams are doing are much more interesting than anything I’ve heard coming from mainstream motorcycle manufactures in a long time. Honestly I think the industry has¬†become somewhat complacent. ¬†I may not be the only one who agrees with this as new¬†motorcycle sales have steadily declined over the past 10 years.

If you also consider how much most bikes sit compared to being ridden, then an electric motorcycle starts to make more sense.

What are the Advantages?

Firstly, they are much cheaper to run.  Depending on where you live it charging it up could cost a few cents or even less than that.  You can theoretically run an electric motorcycle for free like Lighting Motorcycles did at Pikes Peak.

Powertrain maintenance also costs virtually nothing since electric motors rarely break.

What are the Disadvantages?

I like to be honest with people and there are disadvantages to electric motorcycles.

Electric motors don’t’ break but the motor controller, what modulates electricity from the battery to the electric motor, often do.

Also most mechanics do not have a good understanding of electricity

Why did you start this site and club?

Simply put I was looking around for more information than what some of the current sites that cover the industry provided. There are resources out there, but I found a lot of it jumbled around the web.

The club is meant to aggregate and offer information on electric motorcycles and those looking into buying one. For instance we will have a directory of motorcycle dealerships, service centers, and parts suppliers. We will do news stories, updates, and interviews with those in the industry and provide fair reporting.

Another part of the focus on the club will be helping members navigate federal and state taxes credits and incentives for electric vehicles. You can apply for a tax credit in many states depending on a wide variety circumstances. Since electric motorcycles are more costly than gas powered bikes, this can greatly help an average consumer buy one. We will also have a focus on safe riding advocacy.

Can I join the club?

Currently we are working on accepting members and forming the organization so we can be an official motorcycle club.

The official formation of the Electric Motorcycle Club will be operational soon and we will let people know when we are ready to start accepting members. We recommend that you sign-up for our email newsletter to be informed. This will be the¬†only electric motorcycle club, at least that I’m aware of.

Do you own an Electric Motorcycle?

No, I unfortunately do not at the present time. They are too expensive for me to outright purchase even coupled with tax incentives.

Come on, you really think an Electric Motorcycle is practical?

Few people who put their leg over a motorcycle today said, ‚ÄúMan, my motorcycle is so practical!‚ÄĚ

While an electric motorcycle will obviously have it’s disadvantages and advantages over a gas powered bike people buy them because them enjoy the riding experience. Also because they like not using gas. ¬†I’m not sure anyone believes electric motorcycles are really¬†practical or a gas powered bike is practical.

What’s the best way to contact the Club?
